MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is scheduled to deliver his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, July 27, outlining his administration’s accomplishments and priorities for the remaining two years of his term.
This year’s SONA comes amid growing calls from the public for stronger measures against corruption, lower food prices, and increased employment opportunities. Surveys released ahead of the annual address indicate that Filipinos are looking for concrete reforms and tangible results from the administration.
President Marcos is also expected to address key national issues, including governance, economic concerns, and ongoing government programs. The speech follows last year’s widely publicized warning against corruption in flood control projects, where he challenged officials involved by saying, “Mahiya naman kayo.”
Malacañang earlier announced that the 2026 SONA will be simpler and more austere, with no traditional red carpet ceremony, as government resources are being prioritized for the country’s response efforts related to the Middle East crisis.
Vice President Sara Duterte will not attend the event as she is currently abroad.
Security preparations are in place, with more than 20,000 police personnel deployed in key areas around Quezon City to ensure public safety and maintain peace during the event. Authorities have assured the public that maximum tolerance will be observed during rallies and protest activities.
Various multisectoral organizations, including progressive and sectoral groups, are holding demonstrations along designated areas on Commonwealth Avenue to raise concerns on workers’ rights, human rights, environmental protection, food security, and government accountability.
Meanwhile, both the Senate and the House of Representatives opened the Second Regular Session of the 20th Congress ahead of the President’s address.
According to Palace Press Officer Claire Castro, President Marcos’ speech is expected to last approximately one hour and 20 minutes.
