MANILA — Detained Sen. Rodante Marcoleta will continue to be confined at the Philippine National Police General Hospital (PNPGH) after doctors found that his medical condition remains unstable, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Thursday.
PNPGH Chief of Internal Medicine Lt. Col. Benaly Bayani said Marcoleta is still under close medical observation after laboratory examinations revealed elevated cholesterol levels, mild pneumonia, and degenerative disc disease.
Doctors are also awaiting the official results of his two-dimensional echocardiogram (2D Echo), which will help determine whether the senator has additional cardiovascular problems requiring further treatment.
Bayani said Marcoleta’s blood pressure continues to fluctuate, making it premature to determine when he can safely leave the hospital. She noted that his condition requires careful monitoring, particularly because of his age.
She added that rehabilitation specialists have yet to complete their assessment and that any recommendation for additional medical intervention will depend on the outcome of the remaining tests and specialist evaluations.
An initial medical report has already been submitted to the Sandiganbayan, which will decide the next course of action after reviewing the senator’s health condition.
Meanwhile, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group–National Capital Region (CIDG-NCR) Director Col. John Guiagui confirmed that the Sandiganbayan’s warrant of arrest against Marcoleta and former Rep. Mike Defensor for alleged violation of Presidential Decree No. 46, which prohibits government officials from receiving gifts on any occasion, has already been served. The anti-graft court fixed bail for the offense at P30,000 each.
However, Guiagui said neither Marcoleta nor Defensor will be released because both remain detained under a separate non-bailable plunder case filed by the Office of the Ombudsman over the alleged non-disclosure of P75 million in campaign donations.
The PNP also confirmed that it has received the Sandiganbayan’s commitment order placing Marcoleta under the custody of the CIDG until further orders from the court.
On Thursday, Sen. Robinhood “Robin” Padilla visited Marcoleta at the PNP General Hospital. Vice President Sara Duterte had earlier visited the senator on July 7, while immediate family members and legal counsel continue to be allowed regular visits.
