MANILA — Sea travel across several parts of the country ground to a halt on Wednesday as authorities suspended ferry operations on key domestic routes ahead of the onslaught of Super Typhoon Inday, leaving thousands of passengers facing travel disruptions while officials moved to avert maritime accidents.
The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) ordered the suspension of voyages in areas expected to experience rough seas and strong winds, saying the precautionary measure was necessary to ensure the safety of passengers, crew members, and vessels.
Among the affected services were 2GO Travel sailings between Odiongan and Caticlan and Odiongan and Batangas, as well as Super Shuttle Ferry trips between Tagbilaran, Bohol, and Balbagon, Camiguin, including return voyages.
More than 10 ferry departures from Puerto Galera and the Port of Lubang to various destinations were likewise canceled as weather conditions continued to deteriorate.
In Palawan, the MV City of Iligan suspended its round-trip voyage between Coron and El Nido, while ferry operations from Zamboanga City bound for Sulu and Tawi-Tawi were also called off.
Port authorities warned that additional voyage cancellations could be imposed as Super Typhoon Inday intensifies, urging travelers to postpone non-essential trips, monitor official advisories, and coordinate with shipping companies for the latest sailing schedules.
The suspension of ferry services forms part of the government’s nationwide preemptive measures aimed at preventing sea mishaps as one of the strongest tropical cyclones of the year threatens vast areas of the country.
