MANILA — Meralco’s power generation subsidiary is pursuing one of the country’s most ambitious renewable energy initiatives after forging a partnership with a Vietnamese energy company to explore the development of up to 25,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable power and energy storage projects.
Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGEN) announced on Tuesday that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Vietnam’s VinEnergo Energy to jointly assess investments aimed at strengthening the Philippines’ energy security while accelerating the transition to cleaner sources of electricity.
The proposed venture envisions the deployment of integrated renewable energy and battery storage facilities capable of producing 25,000 MW of capacity. Once realized, the project could deliver as much as 5,000 MW of baseload-equivalent power, providing a more stable supply of electricity to the national grid.
MGEN said the collaboration seeks to address the country’s growing power requirements by enhancing the reliability of renewable energy through large-scale storage systems.
Energy storage has become a key component of the government’s renewable energy strategy. The Department of Energy has directed solar and wind developers to integrate storage facilities into their projects to ensure a steady electricity supply even when weather conditions affect generation.
Solar and wind power are considered variable renewable energy sources because their output fluctuates depending on sunlight and wind availability. Battery storage systems help bridge these gaps by storing excess electricity and releasing it during periods of high demand.
“MGEN continues to pursue opportunities that will enable a more reliable, affordable and sustainable energy future,” said MGEN President and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel Rubio.
Rubio noted that the agreement would allow both companies to evaluate how large-scale renewable energy facilities, storage technologies, and related infrastructure could support the country’s long-term energy needs.
Beyond power generation, the partnership may also extend to the electric vehicle (EV) sector. MGEN and VinEnergo have agreed to explore opportunities in developing EV charging infrastructure for both residential and commercial markets.
VinEnergo General Director Nguyen Anh Khoa said the partnership could open broader avenues for cooperation involving MGEN, Meralco, VinEnergo, and other companies within the Vingroup ecosystem.
“We look forward to exploring broader opportunities for collaboration that will create lasting value for the communities we serve,” Khoa said.
The agreement underscores growing investor confidence in the Philippine renewable energy industry as the country seeks to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, strengthen energy security, and meet its clean energy targets in the coming decades.
