MANILA — Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso paid tribute to the city’s most distinguished citizens on Thursday, recognizing exceptional achievements and public service during the Gawad Manileño 2026 awards ceremony at the historic Metropolitan Theater.
The annual recognition program, held as part of Manila’s 455th founding anniversary celebration, honored outstanding individuals and organizations in education, public health, socio-civic service, culture and the arts, mass media, sports, youth development, and environmental stewardship.
This year’s anniversary carries the theme “Matatag sa Hamon, Pinagtibay ng Panahon,” while the awards program was bannered by “Gawad Manileño 2026: Pagpupugay sa Kahusayan at Paglilingkod.”
In his keynote address, Domagoso underscored that the Gawad Manileño represents more than ceremonial recognition, describing it as a long-standing tradition that honors individuals whose contributions have helped build and strengthen the nation’s capital.
The Mayor said the award reflects the city’s gratitude to men and women whose dedication, leadership, and commitment to service have made a meaningful impact on the lives of fellow Manileños.
Domagoso emphasized that the success of Manila cannot be measured solely by infrastructure projects or government programs, but by the character, compassion, and accomplishments of its people.
“A great city is not built by the government alone; it is built by the citizens who choose to care,” the Mayor said.
He added that each awardee embodies the values of resilience, excellence, and service that have enabled Manila to endure challenges and remain strong through generations.
Addressing the city’s youth, Domagoso urged young Manileños to look to the awardees as examples of responsible citizenship and meaningful achievement.
He said true success is measured not only by personal accomplishments but by the ability to uplift communities and improve the lives of others.
The Mayor expressed hope that the stories of this year’s honorees would inspire future leaders to embrace public service, civic responsibility, and a commitment to the common good.
Closing his remarks, Domagoso stressed that Manila’s greatness stems not from its status as the country’s capital, but from the perseverance and dedication of its citizens.
He praised ordinary Manileños who continue to work hard, care for their communities, and contribute to the city’s progress despite daily challenges.
For city officials, community leaders, and residents in attendance, the Gawad Manileño 2026 served as a reminder that the enduring strength of Manila lies in the people who tirelessly serve, inspire, and uplift others.
