MANILA – Filipino and American troops strengthened joint operational readiness through the “Salaknib” Phase 2 operational maneuver (OPMAN), conducted across several training sites in Luzon from June 1 to 16, the Philippine Army said Thursday.
Army spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala said the exercise integrated advanced technologies, mobility operations, and combined-arms capabilities into a coordinated multi-site operation.
He said the drill tested rapid capability integration, long-range movement, and multi-domain operations involving ground, maritime, and air components, including precision fires and air assault missions.
The activity forms part of “Salaknib,” a bilateral exercise symbolizing the Philippines–US defense partnership and aimed at improving interoperability and readiness. Phase 1 was held in April, while Phase 2 began in mid-May and runs until July.
Separately, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force 1st Airborne Brigade commander Maj. Gen. Ishihara Yoshitaka visited the Philippine Army headquarters in Taguig City on June 17 and met with Army vice commander Maj. Gen. Efren Morados. The visit included a tour of the Army museum.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Navy confirmed that BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG-6) conducted tactical maneuver exercises on June 17 as part of preparations for RIMPAC 2026.
Naval units from Singapore, Italy, Japan, and South Korea also participated, with the Philippine Coast Guard’s BRP Gabriela Silang providing escort support.
The Navy said the exercises enhance coordination and seamanship among participating forces. The location of the drill was not disclosed for security reasons.
RIMPAC 2026 is scheduled from June 24 to July 31 in Hawaiian waters.
