MANILA — Pinay pride Alex Eala continued her impressive run on the international tennis circuit after defeating Croatia’s Donna Vekic, 7-5, 6-4, in the opening round of the WTA 500 Berlin Tennis Open in Germany on Wednesday.
The victory further strengthened Eala’s dominance over the experienced Croatian, improving her head-to-head record against Vekic to 3-0 this year.
The 21-year-old Filipina previously scored victories over Vekic at the ASB Classic in New Zealand and the Kooyong Classic exhibition tournament in Australia, making Wednesday’s triumph her third consecutive win against the former world-class campaigner.
Eala’s latest victory came just days after Vekic captured the HSBC Championships title, making the result even more significant as the Filipina star handed the Croatian an early exit in Berlin.
Displaying poise and consistency throughout the match, Eala held off Vekic’s challenges in both sets to secure the straight-set victory and move on to the next stage of the prestigious grass-court tournament.
The win adds another milestone to Eala’s steadily growing resume as she continues to establish herself among the sport’s rising stars ahead of the upcoming major competitions on the international calendar.
