MANILA — Representative Antonio Tinio of the Makabayan bloc questioned the necessity of the special session called by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on June 17, saying there appears to be no urgent legislative measure that cannot wait until the opening of the Second Regular Session of the 20th Congress in July.
In a statement, Tinio said Malacañang has yet to identify any urgent legislation that would justify convening lawmakers during the congressional recess.
According to the lawmaker, the special session appears intended to address issues within the Senate that he believes are aligned with the interests of the administration. He argued that the legislative agenda cited for the session may merely serve as a pretext for pursuing political objectives.
“Malinaw naman na ang special session na ito ay para maresolba ang gusto ng Senado na pabor sa Malacañang,” Tinio said.
Despite his criticism, Tinio acknowledged the need to address concerns involving the Senate. However, he urged the public to remain vigilant regarding developments in both Congress and the Marcos administration.
The Makabayan representative also reiterated calls for accountability among public officials implicated in corruption, stressing the importance of transparency and public oversight in government affairs.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier called for a special session of Congress on June 17, prompting reactions from lawmakers and political groups over the timing and purpose of the move.
