MANILA — Millions of users worldwide experienced disruptions on Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and other Meta-owned platforms on Friday after a widespread outage affected key services across several countries, including the Philippines.
The interruption left users unable to send messages, access news feeds, log into accounts, and use various features on Meta’s social media platforms, prompting a surge of complaints and reports on outage-monitoring websites.
Users from Asia, Europe, North America and other regions reported similar issues, with many saying Messenger conversations were stuck on “sending,” while others encountered login failures, blank screens, and difficulties loading content.
Meta acknowledged the problem through company spokesperson Andy Stone, who said the company was aware of the service disruption and was working to restore normal operations as quickly as possible.
The technology giant, however, did not immediately disclose the cause of the outage, fueling speculation online about whether the disruption stemmed from technical failures or external interference.
Despite the speculation, Meta did not indicate that the incident was related to a cyberattack. Industry observers noted that large-scale outages affecting major technology platforms are often linked to internal infrastructure or network issues, although the company has yet to release an official technical assessment.
The outage also affected businesses, advertisers and content creators who rely on Meta’s platforms for communication, customer engagement and digital marketing activities. Some users reported temporary disruptions in accessing business pages and related services connected to Facebook and Instagram.
In the Philippines, social media users turned to alternative platforms to verify whether the problem was isolated to their accounts or part of a broader global service interruption. Similar reactions were observed in other countries as users sought updates on the status of Meta’s platforms.
Services gradually began recovering in some areas later in the day, although reports of intermittent issues continued to surface as engineers worked to stabilize operations.
The incident underscored the extensive reach of Meta’s platforms, which serve billions of users worldwide and play a critical role in personal communication, business transactions, news dissemination and online commerce.
As of Friday evening, Meta had not released a detailed explanation of what triggered the outage, nor had it provided a timeline for the publication of a comprehensive incident report.
The company said it would continue monitoring the situation while working to fully restore service reliability across its global network.
