By Benjamin Cuaresma
MANILA — The Philippines has achieved a significant breakthrough in agricultural exports with the successful arrival of its first commercial shipment of fresh mangoes in Canada, opening a new market for one of the country’s most prized agricultural products.
The initial shipment of Philippine carabao mangoes recently landed in Toronto, marking the culmination of years of efforts by government agencies and private sector partners to secure broader access to the Canadian market.
Transported aboard Philippine Airlines, the shipment represents a major step in expanding the global reach of Philippine mangoes, long recognized internationally for their exceptional sweetness, aroma, and quality.
Officials said the development is expected to strengthen the country’s agricultural exports while creating new opportunities for Filipino growers, exporters, and businesses seeking to expand their presence in North America.
The first batch of mangoes will initially be distributed through major Filipino retail outlets, including Seafood City, as well as online specialty fruit retailers serving consumers across Canada.
Philippine Consul General to Toronto Kristine Leilani Salle described the shipment as a landmark achievement that highlights the growing demand for premium Philippine products overseas.
She noted that the successful entry of fresh mangoes into Canada demonstrates the effectiveness of collaboration between government institutions and private industry in opening new markets for Filipino products.
According to Salle, the breakthrough is expected to pave the way for regular commercial shipments in the future, benefiting not only exporters but also thousands of mango farmers and stakeholders throughout the agricultural supply chain.
The initiative forms part of the Philippines’ broader strategy to diversify export destinations, strengthen international trade partnerships, and increase the visibility of Philippine-made products in key global markets.
The shipment was facilitated through a coordinated effort involving the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto, the Philippine Trade and Investment Center-Toronto, the Philippine Agriculture Office in Washington, Philippine Airlines, local exporters, and Canadian import partners.
Agriculture and trade officials expressed optimism that the successful launch of the export program will help establish a sustainable supply route for Philippine mangoes in Canada and further enhance the competitiveness of the country’s agricultural sector on the world stage.
