Former Congressman Says Witnesses Are Telling Their Story, Rejects Claims of Coordination or Impeachment Motive

MANILA — Former AnaKalusugan Congressman Mike Defensor has defended his support for the 18 former Marines linked to allegations surrounding the Senate’s ongoing flood control investigation, insisting that the witnesses are simply recounting what they personally know and have experienced.
Defensor dismissed suggestions that the former Marines had been coached or politically motivated, saying their testimonies should be assessed based on their own statements and evidence.
He also rejected claims that he was orchestrating a campaign against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. or that his involvement was tied to any effort to advance impeachment initiatives.
“I have no personal grudge against the President,” Defensor said, adding that he had largely stepped away from politics to focus on private business interests before becoming involved in assisting some of the individuals who had come forward.
Defensor said his involvement began after he learned of the situation of former military personnel who, according to him, wanted their accounts heard publicly. He maintained that he merely offered assistance and support and did not dictate what the witnesses should say.
The former Congressman also denied allegations that members of his staff had attempted to pressure lawmakers into supporting impeachment-related efforts. He specifically refuted claims linking his office to messages allegedly sent to lawmakers regarding impeachment endorsements.
According to Defensor , any statements made by the former Marines were their own and should not be attributed to him.
The issue resurfaced after some observers questioned whether the testimonies of the former Marines had shifted over time, particularly regarding personalities previously mentioned in affidavits connected to complaints filed before the Ombudsman.
Defensor maintained that the contents of the affidavits remain part of official records and that the witnesses merely answer the questions asked of them during committee hearings.
He argued that attempts to discredit the former Marines stem from efforts to undermine their credibility after they were finally given a platform to speak publicly.
The controversy comes amid heightened political tensions surrounding the Senate’s flood control investigation and leadership changes affecting the Blue Ribbon Committee.
Supporters of the inquiry have argued that witnesses should be allowed to testify without intimidation, while critics have questioned the credibility and motivations of some individuals involved.
As the investigation moves forward, lawmakers are expected to continue examining the testimonies, affidavits, and documentary evidence presented before the Senate and other government bodies.
The allegations and counter-allegations remain subject to official investigation, and no final findings have been issued by the appropriate authorities.
