MANILA — The United States has announced the transfer of a 210-foot Reliance-class Coast Guard cutter to the Philippines, reinforcing ongoing efforts to enhance the country’s maritime security and territorial patrol capabilities.
The announcement was made by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during the Shangri-La Dialogue, where senior defense officials from both countries met to discuss regional security concerns and future defense cooperation.
According to Hegseth, the patrol cutter will support Philippine operations aimed at safeguarding the country’s maritime interests, including monitoring territorial waters and protecting its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
The transfer represents one of the latest initiatives under the long-standing security alliance between Manila and Washington as both nations seek to strengthen maritime domain awareness and regional deterrence.
Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. welcomed the development, emphasizing that defense cooperation remains a cornerstone of the broader relationship between the two allies.
Teodoro said both countries remain committed to advancing shared interests through stronger partnerships that extend beyond defense into economic security, human security, and regional development.
Philippine and US officials also discussed expanding cooperation in territorial defense and other security priorities during their meetings on the sidelines of the regional security forum.
Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. participated in the discussions and confirmed that developments in Bajo de Masinloc were among the issues brought up during engagements with defense partners.
The talks reflected continuing concerns over security developments in the West Philippine Sea and the need for closer coordination among like-minded nations in maintaining regional stability.
Aside from meeting with US officials, the Philippine delegation also held discussions with regional partners. Teodoro met with Singapore’s defense minister to explore the possibility of a future visiting forces agreement, while separate talks with South Korea focused on expanding bilateral defense cooperation.
These engagements highlight Manila’s continuing efforts to deepen security ties across the Indo-Pacific amid evolving geopolitical challenges.
The vessel transfer comes as the Philippines and the United States commemorate the 75th anniversary of their Mutual Defense Treaty, underscoring the enduring nature of their alliance.
Both sides are expected to continue discussions on defense modernization, maritime security, and regional cooperation during the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting later this year, where further initiatives are anticipated to strengthen collective security efforts in the region.
