MANILA — Former Senate President Koko Pimentel has raised concerns over the growing divisions within the Senate, saying the chamber may need more effective leadership to overcome internal disputes that are affecting its operations.
During an interview on Sunday, Pimentel pointed to the ongoing clash between the majority and minority blocs over a proposal allowing senators to participate and vote remotely during plenary sessions. He said the disagreement reflects a broader problem of disunity within the institution.
Pimentel stressed that the Senate must remain focused on carrying out its constitutional mandate, especially with the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte on the horizon.
He remarked that leadership requires the ability to build consensus and maintain order among members. If a leader finds it difficult to achieve those goals, Pimentel said, stepping aside for someone better suited to unite the chamber could be an option worth considering.
Despite his remarks, the former Senate President did not explicitly call for Cayetano’s resignation, emphasizing that such a decision should be made by the Senate leader himself.
Pimentel added that unless the current tensions are resolved, the chamber risks remaining mired in political disputes rather than addressing its legislative and constitutional responsibilities.
