MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has rolled out a large-scale security deployment across the country to support the opening of the new school year, positioning over 55,000 personnel to help ensure public safety as students return to classrooms.
The heightened police presence comes as schools, transport terminals, and major commercial areas experience a surge in activity, with families rushing to complete last-minute back-to-school purchases.
PNP data showed that 55,507 personnel have been assigned nationwide. This includes thousands of police officers, support staff from various government agencies, and force multipliers assisting in visibility and security operations.
The initiative is part of a broader security strategy designed to safeguard students, educators, parents, and school workers during the opening period of classes.
In recent days, several busy commercial hubs have recorded increased crowds, particularly in areas such as Divisoria, Quiapo, Recto, Sta. Cruz, Baclaran, Greenhills, and major shopping centers across Metro Manila and other regions.
The rise in foot traffic has been attributed to the seasonal rush of shoppers purchasing uniforms, school supplies, and other essential items ahead of the school opening.
To address the situation, police leadership has ordered intensified visibility patrols and the deployment of additional personnel in crowded commercial zones and transport corridors.
Authorities said the increased police presence is intended to discourage petty crimes like theft and pickpocketing, which tend to rise during periods of heavy public movement.
The PNP assured the public that these security measures will remain in place in the coming weeks to maintain order and ensure a safe environment for students and the general public as classes begin.
