MANILA — Authorities have arrested Gawad Kalinga founder Tony Meloto following the issuance of a warrant of arrest by the Regional Trial Court in Malolos, Bulacan, over two counts of qualified trafficking in persons.
The arrest was confirmed by the Police Regional Office 3 (PRO-3), which said the court did not recommend bail for the charges filed against Meloto.
The case stemmed from complaints filed last year accusing the longtime NGO leader of acts of lasciviousness, sexual harassment, and human trafficking. Two male beneficiaries of the organization allegedly accused Meloto of molestation and abuse.
Philippine National Police chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the PNP remains firm in its campaign against human trafficking and vowed that law enforcers would continue pursuing offenders regardless of status or influence.
“Human trafficking will never be tolerated because the lives, dignity, and future of victims are at stake,” Nartatez said.
Authorities have yet to release further details regarding the legal proceedings and Meloto’s transfer to police custody.
