MANILA — Persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the Puerto Princesa City Jail in Palawan set aside the hardships of prison life as they joined the traditional Flores de Mayo celebration inside the detention facility.
Despite being behind bars, inmates took part in the religious and cultural activity aimed at strengthening their faith and uplifting their spirits. Wearing colorful attire and carrying flowers, participants embraced the tradition as a symbol of hope, renewal, and devotion.
According to officials of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, the event was more than just a festive gathering.
Jail authorities said the activity forms part of the rehabilitation program designed to encourage positive values, discipline, and emotional healing among inmates.
BJMP personnel explained that spiritual and cultural programs help PDLs cope with the challenges of incarceration while motivating them to transform their lives for the better.
The jail management also emphasized that activities promoting faith and community participation play an important role in preparing inmates for eventual reintegration into society.
