MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) is investigating allegations that “secret meetings” took place involving families of missing sabungeros and former police officers linked to the high-profile disappearance case.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said investigators are verifying reports that some police personnel may have helped arrange these meetings, following the relief of two officers who are now facing complaints before the National Police Commission (Napolcom).
He warned that any improper involvement by police officers undermines public trust and violates the standards expected of the organization.
Nartatez emphasized that officers must remain within the limits of their authority, especially in sensitive cases that are already under judicial review.
Napolcom previously revealed that two police officers were allegedly involved in facilitating meetings between relatives of victims and dismissed officers connected to the case.
The PNP has named the relieved personnel as Lt. Nadame Malang of the former Highway Patrol Group and Maj. Reynaldo Pañebe Jr., former Custodial Center warden.
Authorities said the internal investigation will run alongside Napolcom’s inquiry to ensure a comprehensive review of the allegations.
Nartatez also called on individuals with relevant information to assist the investigation, assuring that the probe will be impartial and that anyone found liable will be held accountable.ia/mnm
