MANILA — Senator Erwin Tulfo said Thursday that the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte is expected to begin after the congressional break.
Tulfo explained that House prosecutors will be given 10 calendar days to submit their reply once Duterte files her comment, adding that the Vice President has until June 1 to present her answer.
He noted that the formal proceedings are set to open on July 6. “The trial proper will start on July 6, after our break,” Tulfo said.
The Senate is scheduled to go on sine die adjournment from June 6 to July 26, although Tulfo said lawmakers may be called back earlier than planned to begin the trial.
“There’s a possibility we return earlier. By July 6, we should begin right away,” he said, stressing the need for immediacy.
He added that once President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. delivers the State of the Nation Address (SONA), proceedings are expected to move quickly, with senators likely dedicating several days a week to the trial alongside limited regular sessions.
