MANILA – The Philippines’ women’s basketball program has a new leader after the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) appointed Canadian mentor Burke “BT” Toews as head coach of Gilas Pilipinas Women.
The SBP confirmed the decision in a social media announcement, noting that Toews was chosen after an extensive global recruitment process that considered more than ten international applicants.
The governing body said the move supports its continued effort to strengthen the national women’s team, which is currently ranked 30th in the FIBA world standings.
Toews joins Gilas following a highly successful stint in Japan with the Fujitsu Red Waves of the Women’s Japan Basketball League. Under his leadership, the team won back-to-back league championships in 2024 and 2025, along with a title in the All-Japan Championship.
Over a decade with Fujitsu, he helped build one of the league’s most consistent programs, reaching five championship finals and earning three Coach of the Year citations.
Known for his system rooted in Japan’s high-tempo and disciplined style of play, Toews is expected to introduce a more structured and dynamic approach to Gilas Women.
He succeeds Pat Aquino, with key international tournaments ahead including the FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament in August and the Asian Games in September.
