PNP BRACES FOR MASS PROTESTS, POLITICAL SHOWDOWN
By Benjamin Cuaresma
MANILA — Police forces across Metro Manila and several major cities have been placed on full alert as the Senate prepares to convene as an impeachment court, raising fears of massive rallies, political unrest, and heated confrontations between rival camps.
Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said authorities are expecting emotionally charged demonstrations as political tensions continue to escalate over the looming impeachment proceedings.
“Our mission is to make sure all activities remain peaceful and orderly. Emotions are high, and police visibility is necessary to prevent chaos and maintain security,” Nartatez said.
The Senate leadership earlier confirmed that the chamber will formally open impeachment court proceedings based on constitutional procedures — a development expected to trigger intensified political actions in Metro Manila, Davao City, and other key areas nationwide.
Security deployments have already been reinforced around the Senate complex, government institutions, and identified rally hotspots as authorities prepare for possible large-scale mobilizations from opposing groups.
Police are also monitoring developments following days of protest actions tied to the controversial arrival — and later escape — of Sen. Ronald ‘Bato’ Dela Rosa, an incident that further fueled public outrage and political tensions.
Nartatez stressed that the PNP’s role is to maintain public safety and not interfere with lawful protests.
“We understand the emotions of the people, but we ask the public not to see the PNP as the enemy. Our duty is to protect everyone and keep peace on the streets,” he said.
Authorities said police units remain on standby for any possible escalation as the political climate surrounding the impeachment battle continues to heat up.
The PNP also urged rally organizers and protesters to keep all demonstrations peaceful and orderly to avoid violence and disruption.
