MANILA — A Filipino teacher in Arizona is making waves after receiving one of the highest honors in his school network, earning recognition as “Teacher of the Year” and becoming a source of pride for Filipinos overseas.
John Francis Saavedra, who teaches English at Legacy Traditional Schools in Glendale, Arizona, was chosen from among educators across multiple campuses for the prestigious award. The recognition highlighted not only his classroom achievements but also the impact of his Filipino upbringing on his teaching style.
The award was formally announced during a ceremony in Phoenix earlier this month, where Saavedra reflected on the people who inspired his journey, including his family and former mentors in the Philippines.
Saavedra said the values he learned growing up as a Filipino — including resilience, respect, and compassion — continue to guide the way he connects with students in the United States.
Known for encouraging creativity and self-confidence in the classroom, Saavedra has spent years helping students improve their writing, communication, and public speaking skills through interactive learning activities.
He also shared that adjusting to life and teaching in America came with challenges, especially as an immigrant educator. However, he said embracing his cultural identity allowed him to connect more meaningfully with students and fellow teachers.
Saavedra noted that many of his students may never have had a Filipino teacher before, making representation and cultural understanding an important part of his work.
Despite receiving statewide recognition, the educator said his biggest accomplishment remains seeing students grow academically and personally. He added that he hopes to continue mentoring young learners and future educators as he pursues further studies.
