MANILA — Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla on Wednesday defended the appointment of former Iloilo City mayor Jed Mabilog as undersecretary of the agency, describing the move as an effort toward “reform” rather than political retaliation.
“His experience in local government will be a valuable asset in the department,” Remulla said in a text message to reporters.
He added that the hardships Mabilog endured in recent years could strengthen his resolve to promote fairness and accountability in local governance.
“Furthermore, the injustice he went through will fuel his desire to level the playing field in local governance,” the Interior chief said.
The appointment was confirmed on Wednesday by Information Usec. Claire Castro.
Mabilog previously left the Philippines in 2017 after then-President Rodrigo Duterte publicly accused him of involvement in the illegal drug trade.
That same year, the Office of the Ombudsman dismissed him from office over allegations involving unexplained wealth amounting to P8.9 million between 2012 and 2013.
After years abroad, Mabilog returned to the country in 2024 to contest the accusations against him and clear his name.
In 2025, he was granted executive clemency by Ferdinand Marcos.
