MANILA – Rising tennis star Kathlyn Bugna of La Carlota, Negros Occidental delivered a standout performance after capturing three championships in the Bagong Pilipinas Age Group Tennis Tournament held Monday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Malate, Manila.
The 14-year-old Batang Onay/RSB player dominated the girls’ competitions, defeating Francine Wong, 6-0, 6-2, in the U16 final before overpowering Chiara Bate, 6-3, 6-0, to claim the U18 crown.
Bugna also teamed up with Tori Deocampo to secure the U18 doubles title, beating Jana Bermejo and Khalilah Imalay, 8-4. The Grade 8 student of Doña Hortencia Salas Benedicto National High School previously swept three titles in the Roxas City leg last month, further proving her consistency on the junior circuit.
In the boys’ division, Miguel Lagac III of Quezon City also made a strong statement by winning two titles. He cruised past Nicholas Andal, 6-0, 6-1, in the U16 finals before topping Yñigo Naredo, 6-4, 6-2, in the U18 category.
Both Bugna and Lagac were named Most Valuable Players in the Group 2 tournament sanctioned by Philta and Universal Tennis.
Other winners included Tyronne Caro, who edged Jairus Peralta, 6-4, 7-6(5), for the U14 boys title, while Francine Wong rebounded to win the U14 girls crown over Michaela Suarez, 6-3, 6-3.
In the U12 finals, Raven Licayan of Cavite outlasted Noel Andre Zachary Zoleta, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, while Kate Chavez of Iloilo defeated Ellythia Comia, 6-1, 6-1.
Doubles champions included Yñigo Naredo and Cristiano Calingasan in the boys U18, Jaynelle Castro and Athena Liwag in the girls U14, and Jairus Peralta with Jan Caleb Villeno in the boys U14.
The Bagong Pilipinas tennis circuit continues to serve as a key grassroots development platform, giving young athletes exposure to high-level competition and strengthening the country’s future tennis pipeline under the Philippine Sports Commission.
