MANILA -A 70-year-old woman died Sunday morning after she was struck by a delivery van while crossing a busy intersection in Tondo, Manila, police said.
The fatal accident occurred at about 7:50 a.m. on May 4 along the northbound lane of Jose Abad Santos Street, corner Bambang Street, according to a report from the Manila Police District.
Police identified the pedestrian as Evelyn Ong Terrano, 70, married, of 1636 A. Rivere Street, Tondo.
She was pronounced dead at the scene by responding personnel from the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office led by Victor Absalon.
The driver was identified as Bernie Banga Paller, of legal age, a resident of WPD Headquarters on United Nations Avenue, Ermita. He was driving a white Mitsubishi L300 with plate number NKG-8537.
Initial investigation showed the L300 was traversing the northbound lane of Jose Abad Santos Avenue when it reached the corner of Bambang Street.
The van’s front portion hit Terrano as she was crossing from west to east on Bambang Street. The impact threw the victim several meters away, causing her to land on the cemented pavement. She sustained fatal injuries.
The L300 sustained damage to its front portion.
Terrano’s remains were turned over to Sanctuary Funeral Services for safekeeping pending further investigation.
Police said the case is classified as a vehicular accident resulting in homicide.
The driver is under custody.
