MANILA, Philippines — A police officer linked to the deaths of his estranged wife and young son has been dismissed from the service after the National Police Commission (Napolcom) found him guilty of grave misconduct and obstruction-related violations.
Police Senior Master Sergeant John Mollenido was ordered removed from the police force following an en banc ruling, according to Napolcom. The case stemmed from the deaths of his wife, Police Senior Master Sergeant Diane Mollenido, and their 8-year-old child, Ysmael.
Authorities earlier recovered Diane’s body in a creek in Bulacan on Jan. 24, while her son was later found in Tarlac on Jan. 29. Investigators said the mother died from a gunshot wound, while the child reportedly suffocated.
Napolcom said Mollenido played a role in the immediate cremation of both remains while under custody, having signed authorization documents prior to the completion of required forensic examinations. The agency said this resulted in the possible loss of critical evidence.
The commission cited violations of anti-obstruction laws and police administrative rules, saying the actions reflected a disregard for due legal process and police duty.
However, Mollenido’s legal counsel disputed the findings, saying the officer has not yet received the official decision and will file the appropriate appeal once it is formally served.
The lawyer explained that the cremation process was handled by a funeral home, and Mollenido only signed authorization papers believing proper procedures were being observed. He denied any intent to destroy evidence or hinder investigation, arguing that the legal elements of obstruction were not met.
The case remains subject to possible appeal, according to the defense.
