MANILA, Philippines — Former broadcaster Jay Sonza was arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Quezon City on Thursday night in connection with a cyberlibel complaint involving alleged false medical records of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Authorities said the arrest was carried out after a Pasay City court issued a warrant, with Sonza now under NBI custody.
Following the arrest, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) announced it will further strengthen efforts against the spread of fake news online.
PCO Secretary Dave Gomez praised law enforcement agencies for their action, saying the government will continue to pursue individuals responsible for spreading disinformation.
“We are working closely with law enforcement and responsible online platforms to identify and hold accountable those who spread false claims,” Gomez said.
He emphasized that freedom of expression must be balanced with responsibility. “Free speech is protected, but it must not be used to spread lies. It should remain truthful and responsible,” he said.
The PCO added that its Oplan Kontra Fake News campaign aims to curb misinformation that may harm public trust and democratic discourse.
Officials also confirmed that multiple fake news-related cases have already been filed and are under investigation by the NBI and the Department of Justice.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag confirmed Sonza’s arrest and ongoing detention following the court order.
