MANILA – Plans are underway for a major transformation of Manila’s historic sports district, with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) proposing a significant expansion of the Rizal Memorial Stadium while SM Prime Holdings moves to develop a new indoor sports arena at the former Harrison Plaza site.
The two projects were discussed during a meeting between PSC officials and SM Prime executives on Wednesday, as both sides explored a partnership aimed at upgrading the area into a modern sports and lifestyle hub without losing its historical identity.
SM Prime chairman Hans Sy said the company is eager to contribute to the redevelopment after touring the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, describing it as an opportunity to elevate a landmark location.
PSC chairman John Patrick “Pato” Gregorio said the collaboration is still in its early stages but holds strong potential to improve both the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex and the adjacent Harrison Plaza area, which sit just across Adriatico Street from each other.
One of the key proposals involves expanding the Rizal Memorial Stadium from its current capacity of roughly 12,800 seated spectators (and up to around 15,000 including standing areas) to about 25,000 seats following rehabilitation. The PSC also plans to replace the existing artificial turf with natural grass, a requirement for international football competitions under AFC regulations.
This change could benefit local clubs competing in AFC tournaments that require natural playing surfaces.
On the other side of the redevelopment, SM Prime is planning to install a FIBA-standard indoor basketball court at the Harrison Plaza site, which will be rebranded as SM Harrison once completed next year. The venue is designed to be flexible, hosting multiple sports, including volleyball, badminton, tennis, pickleball, padel, and table tennis.
The facility is expected to serve as a multi-sport venue capable of hosting both local and international events, potentially joining nearby venues such as the Rizal Memorial Coliseum and Ninoy Aquino Stadium as key sports hubs in the area.
The project also forms part of SM’s Active Hub initiative, reflecting its expanding role in sports and wellness infrastructure.
If realized, the PSC-SM Prime partnership could reshape the district into a premier sports destination that combines heritage preservation with modern development, offering upgraded facilities for athletes and fans alike.
