MANILA – Filipino cuisine continues to gain global recognition after street food from the Philippines earned a major award at a culinary showcase in Ottawa, Canada.
The Philippine Embassy in Canada, represented by chefs David Vinoya and Jan Michael Co, secured the Judges’ Award during the 2026 YMCA Embassy Chef Showcase held on April 16 in the Canadian capital.
Highlighting the country’s vibrant street food culture, the Philippine entry featured a “kanto”-inspired concept, presenting a selection of well-loved grilled dishes. These included beef tapa, chicken inasal, longganisa, and pork barbecue, paired with achara, all collectively branded as “D’ Original Mang David’s BBQ.”
Philippine Ambassador to Canada Jose Victor Chan-Gonzaga said the goal was not only to introduce Filipino flavors but also to recreate the everyday experience of locals enjoying street food after work, whether while commuting or returning home.
The annual event gathered 15 participating countries, each showcasing their signature dishes. The Philippine entry stood out for its strong execution, appealing presentation, rich flavors, and creativity, according to the panel of judges led by renowned Canadian cookbook author Margaret Dickenson.
The Philippine booth also drew large crowds, becoming one of the event’s most visited attractions. Its presentation combined traditional flavors with modern visual elements, complemented by promotional materials from the “Love the Philippines” tourism campaign.
The embassy noted that the recognition comes at a fitting time, as both Filipino Food Month and Filipino Restaurant Month are being celebrated in Canada this April.
