MANILA — House Speaker Faustino Dy III on Thursday said the arrest of former Ako Bicol party-list representative Zaldy Co in the Czech Republic marks a significant move toward accountability and justice for Filipinos.
Dy issued the statement after President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. confirmed Co’s detention in Prague, saying the former lawmaker had been arrested after entering the Czech Republic without proper documentation and is now in the custody of local authorities.
According to Dy, Co’s arrest sends a strong message that individuals who attempt to evade the law will eventually be held accountable.
He added that the development reflects the administration’s firm stance against corruption, particularly in relation to alleged irregularities in government flood control projects.
The Speaker also recalled the President’s earlier pronouncement that corruption has no place under his administration and that accountability must be applied to all, especially public officials handling government funds.
Despite the issue, Dy said the House of Representatives remains focused on addressing urgent national concerns, including the economic effects of the ongoing Middle East crisis.
He said lawmakers continue to prioritize measures aimed at strengthening the economy and providing relief to affected sectors.
