MANILA — Senator Risa Hontiveros is calling for stronger accountability from digital gaming platforms, warning that online spaces widely used by children are increasingly vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.
The appeal follows reports suggesting that online interactions may have influenced minors allegedly involved in violent incidents, raising alarms over the risks posed by loosely regulated digital environments.
Speaking at a Senate hearing on Tuesday, Hontiveros stressed that the issue goes beyond isolated cases of harm. Instead, she pointed to systemic gaps that allow dangerous behavior to thrive online.
She noted that platforms like Roblox have grown into complex social ecosystems where young users communicate and engage with others, but are also exposed to potential threats.
According to the senator, these platforms can be misused for online sexual abuse, grooming, extortion, and the spread of violent or extremist content targeting children.
Hontiveros warned that without clear and enforceable regulations, such risks may worsen, especially when accounts fall into the hands of malicious actors. She emphasized that safeguarding minors should not be left solely to families, urging technology companies and digital intermediaries to take a more proactive role.
She also underscored the need for standards grounded in children’s rights, ensuring both protection and respect for their dignity in digital spaces.
In response, Roblox Vice President for Global Public Policy Nicky Jackson Colaco said the company is working on a “safety-by-default” framework, part of broader global efforts to strengthen user protection across its platform.
