MANILA, Philippines — The Gilas Pilipinas women’s 3×3 team is heading back to the global stage after a commanding win over Singapore, 21-10, in the FIBA 3×3 World Cup qualifiers on Sunday.
The Filipinas gradually pulled away in what started as a tight contest, taking control midway through the match. A strong inside game, highlighted by Kaycee dela Rosa, helped the Philippines build a 13-7 advantage.
Singapore’s Jermaine Lim Jia Ying tried to keep her squad within striking distance, but Gilas maintained its rhythm. Back-to-back baskets from dela Rosa and a conversion by Mikka Cacho widened the gap to 16-8.
The Philippines never looked back, sealing the victory with free throws from Afril Bernardino to clinch the World Cup berth with under a minute remaining.
The qualification marks the country’s return to the tournament since 2018, when it last competed as host.
Gilas Pilipinas enters the World Cup on a high note after also capturing a historic silver medal in the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup.
Earlier in the qualifiers, the Filipinas defeated Singapore in pool play but absorbed losses to Brazil and Lithuania, the latter denying them an outright berth and forcing a knockout rematch with the hosts.
The FIBA 3×3 World Cup is scheduled for June in Warsaw, Poland.
