MANILA — Alex Eala’s run at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz ended in disappointment after a straight-sets loss to Jelena Ostapenko, but the match still highlighted both her potential and the fine margins at elite level.
Eala impressed early and looked in control of the second set, racing to a 5-1 advantage. Yet momentum shifted dramatically as Ostapenko, a former Grand Slam champion, used her experience to recover and close out the match 6-4, 7-5.
While the defeat prevented a deeper tournament run, Eala still managed to secure 60 WTA ranking points. This lifts her to around No. 45 in the live rankings and softens the impact of earlier setbacks in the season, including her Miami campaign where she slipped down the rankings after a third-round exit.
Financially, her Linz performance still proved rewarding, with €15,690 added to her prize money tally.
The 20-year-old now shifts her attention to Stuttgart, where she is set to compete in a WTA 500 event featuring top-ranked stars such as Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and Iga Swiatek. The tournament will mark another step up in competition level for the rising Filipina star.
Tennis analyst Greg Rusedski has previously praised Eala’s growth, noting that her development at the Rafael Nadal Academy is helping shape her into a more complete competitor, especially on clay where physical and tactical demands are higher.
Despite the setback in Linz, Eala’s steady ranking progress and exposure against top players continue to signal a promising trajectory on the WTA Tour.
