MANILA — Three airport screeners at NAIA Terminal 3 are in hot water after an Australian tourist’s cash went missing during a routine screening.
The two security officers and their supervisor have been suspended and are facing charges, thanks to a tip from a vigilant passenger and incriminating CCTV footage. The stolen cash, ₱7,000 and NTD 1,000 (around ₱1,900), was recovered and returned to the tourist, who surprisingly declined to press charges.
The incident has prompted DOTr Secretary Giovanni “Banoy” Lopez to issue a stern warning to airport personnel.
“If it is proven that some OTS Security Screening Officers are leading violations of the law, including stealing passengers’ belongings or money, you will definitely be held accountable and we will ensure that the perpetrators are punished,” Lopez said.
The Office for Transportation Security (OTS) is taking the incident seriously, with Administrator Gilberto Cruz assuring that those found responsible will face consequences.
The DOTr is tightening oversight on airport screeners to prevent similar incidents in the future.
