MANILA — A leadership transition appears underway at the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), with Commissioner Nancy Catamco reportedly designated as its new chairperson.
The development, first shared through a social media post, signals a possible recalibration in the agency’s leadership at a time when indigenous peoples’ rights and ancestral domain concerns remain at the forefront of national discourse.
Catamco brings with her a deep well of public service experience, having served as Cotabato governor and previously as a member of the House of Representatives. Her tenure has been marked by initiatives centered on community development and inclusive governance.
The NCIP, mandated to implement policies under the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act (IPRA), stands as the primary government body tasked with ensuring the protection and promotion of IP rights across the country.
Should her appointment be confirmed, stakeholders expect Catamco to steer the commission toward more responsive and community-centered programs, particularly in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.
