Ninety-nine Filipinos, including 73 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and 26 dependents, arrived safely in Manila yesterday, marking a significant milestone in the government’s repatriation efforts.
The group landed at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 aboard a Gulf Air flight, after traveling by land to Dammam, Saudi Arabia.
Upon arrival, they were warmly welcomed by officials from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), who provided them with food, transportation, temporary shelter, and other support services.
This repatriation is part of a larger effort by the Philippine government to bring home Filipinos stranded in the Middle East amid escalating tensions.
Since February 28, over 3,248 Filipinos have been repatriated, with the government working tirelessly to ensure their safe and orderly return.
“The safety, welfare, and orderly return of Filipino workers caught in the turmoil in the Middle East remain a priority for the government,” said Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac.
However, the situation in the Middle East remains precarious, with many Filipinos still stranded in countries like Lebanon and Kuwait. The Philippine Embassy in Beirut has issued advisories urging Filipinos to leave Lebanon immediately, citing the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah.
The government has also set up a One Repatriation Command Center to provide assistance to distressed OFWs.
The repatriation efforts are not without challenges. Many OFWs face financial difficulties, abuse, and exploitation, highlighting the need for stronger protections and support systems.
“It was so hard. I had no sleep, no day off,” said Amelia Montargo, a repatriated OFW from Kuwait. The government has promised to provide financial assistance, reintegration services, and other forms of support to returning OFWs.
As the situation in the Middle East continues to unfold, the Philippine government remains committed to protecting its citizens abroad.
The repatriation of the 99 Filipinos from Kuwait is a testament to this commitment, and a reminder of the ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and welfare of Filipinos worldwide.
