ISTANBUL – Pope Leo XIV reminded the faithful on Sunday that Jesus cannot be used to justify violence, as he embodies peace and compassion.
“Jesus rejects war and those who wage it,” the pope said at St. Peter’s Square during Palm Sunday Mass, according to Vatican News. “He does not listen to the prayers of those who engage in conflict.”
Urging people to embrace brotherhood, the pontiff added, “Put down your weapons! Remember your shared humanity.”
He offered prayers for victims of violence, invoking the Virgin Mary: “Holy Mary, grant us the assurance that death no longer holds sway, that injustices are counted, that war’s flames are diminishing, and that the hardships of the poor are drawing to a close.”
