MANILA – The Philippine National Police reaffirmed its commitment to justice and family support following a deadly ambush in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao del Sur, which claimed the lives of five officers and injured three others last Saturday night.
PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. instructed the Bangsamoro police to provide immediate and ongoing assistance to the victims’ families. At Camp Crame on Monday, he led a moment of silence and offered condolences.
“The sacrifice of our fallen officers will never be forgotten. The PNP will stand by your families and ensure they receive the care and support they deserve,” Nartatez said, noting that posthumous awards and financial aid from the PNP and the Office of the President are being arranged.
Condemning the attack as an assault on law and order, Nartatez stressed, “Violence like this has no place in our nation. The PNP will pursue justice relentlessly and will not be deterred.”
Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño confirmed the wounded officers are recovering safely, with the PNP covering medical costs. Investigators are exploring the possibility of the ambush being a retaliatory attack by a local terrorist group linked to recent law enforcement operations.
Security measures have been strengthened, including additional rapid response teams, randomized checkpoints, and unpredictable patrol schedules. Nartatez reiterated that the incident will not weaken the PNP’s dedication to maintaining peace and fostering development across Maguindanao del Sur and neighboring communities.
