MANILA, Philippines — Rising Filipina tennis star Alexandra Eala is scheduled to compete in the Madrid Open, continuing her European clay-court swing in one of the Women’s Tennis Association’s premier events.
The WTA 1000 tournament will take place from April 21 to May 3 in Spain, following Eala’s participation in the Linz Open in Austria from April 6 to 12.
The 19-year-old Filipina is already listed among the players expected to compete in Madrid. The entry list includes several elite names in women’s tennis, such as reigning champion Aryna Sabalenka, fourth-ranked Coco Gauff, sixth-ranked Amanda Anisimova, and teenage standout Mirra Andreeva.
Eala’s chances of being seeded will hinge on her performance in Linz. The Madrid Open features a 64-player field, with the top 32 players in the rankings as of April 20 receiving seeded positions.
Unlike the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open, where seeded players skip the opening round due to a larger draw, Madrid requires all players to start from the first round.
Still, seeded players benefit from more favorable pairings early in the tournament by facing lower-ranked opponents.
Eala is expected to slide to around No. 45 in the rankings when the latest list is released Monday.
To regain a Top 30 position, she would likely need a deep run at the Linz Open, particularly a semifinal finish that would add 195 ranking points to her tally.
That result would push her live ranking total from 1,255 to about 1,450 points.
A quarterfinal appearance, which carries 108 points, could only lift her into the mid-30s range, making a seeded spot in Madrid unlikely.
Currently, Eala still holds 1,525 points in the official rankings, which have not yet accounted for the 270 points deducted after she failed to match her 2025 Miami Open semifinal performance.
Earlier this year, she collected 120 points at the Miami Open after reaching the Round of 16, where she lost to Karolina Muchova in straight sets, 0-6, 2-6.
The upcoming Madrid Open will mark Eala’s fourth stint in the tournament.
She first competed there in 2022 through a wildcard entry to the qualifiers before receiving main draw wildcards from 2023 to 2025.
In the 2025 edition, she was eliminated in the Round of 64 by world No. 3 Iga Swiatek, who defeated the Filipina 6-4, 4-6, 2-6.
