MANILA — The return of US sailors to Subic Bay has brought significant benefits to the Philippines, particularly in terms of economy and security.
The revival of the former US naval base has created jobs and stimulated local businesses, with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority reporting employment of nearly 150,000 residents in the free port zone.
The Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) between the Philippines and the US has allowed for increased US military presence and investments in the country.
This partnership aims to enhance regional security and stability, particularly amid rising tensions in the South China Sea.
Military presence has also breathed new life into Angeles City and Olongapo’s local economies, particularly in small business industries like hospitality and entertainment.
Fields Avenue in Angeles City and the red light district in Olongapo are buzzing again, with bars, restaurants, and shops catering to the influx of sailors on shore leave.
Local vendors, hotels, and tour operators are also benefiting from the increased foot traffic, as sailors explore the city’s offerings and take part in organized tours and events.
This resurgence is providing a welcome boost to small businesses and entrepreneurs, who are seeing increased revenue and opportunities for growth.
