MANILA — A shocking wave of violence has hit the media community as Julito “Jaz” Diamante Calo, a broadcaster from La Castellana, Negros Occidental, was gunned down on March 20, 2026.
The National Press Club (NPC) has condemned the killing, calling it a grave threat to press freedom and journalist safety.
Calo, host of “Waswasanay sa Quinto Distrito” on 88.3 DNN News FM, was shot by unidentified assailants in a white SUV while standing outside his home.
The NPC is urging authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“This is a stark reminder of the dangers journalists face in the line of duty,” said NPC president Leonel Magistrado Abasola.
“We stand with Calo’s family, friends, and colleagues, and demand collective action to protect press freedom.”
The NPC is calling on media organizations and civil society to unite in defending journalists’ rights and safety. The public is also urged to remain vigilant and provide any information that can help solve the case.
