MANILA – A strong second-half performance powered the Philippine women’s football team to a 2-0 triumph over Uzbekistan, securing their place in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup during the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Queensland, Australia.
Angela Beard opened the scoring shortly after halftime, capitalizing on a cross from Jael Guy in the 47th minute. The Filipinas maintained their momentum as Jacklyn Sawicki extended the lead in the 52nd minute, once again finishing off a well-delivered pass from Guy.
Coach Mark Torcaso lauded the team’s youthful core, highlighting their composure and potential on the international stage.
“Our squad is young, but they showed maturity and confidence in a high-pressure match. This achievement reflects their hard work and bright future,” he said.
With the victory, the Philippines secured its second World Cup appearance, joining Asia’s top qualifiers including Japan, Australia, China, Chinese Taipei, and South Korea.
The win was also significant as it ended a long-standing struggle against Uzbekistan, marking their first victory in four encounters since 1997. Their last meeting, a friendly match in Manila in October, ended in a draw.
Despite early missed opportunities, including a close attempt in the 38th minute denied by goalkeeper Maftuna Jonimqulova, Beard eventually broke through and set the tone for the Filipinas’ decisive win.
