MANILA – The House Committee on Justice, led by Batangas Rep. Gerville “Jinky Bitrics” Luistro, will continue impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte even during the House of Representatives’ scheduled recess, Luistro confirmed Thursday.
Speaking on radio, the Justice Committee chair said the hearings will proceed to ensure the constitutional process is not delayed. “Our recess starts on March 18, but I plan to continue the committee’s work,” she said. “I want to avoid any postponements in this process.”
Luistro highlighted that the ongoing hearings are necessary to prevent further strain on government bodies and maintain public focus.
At the same time, she reassured that efficiency will not override fairness. “We will avoid unnecessary delays, but due process and the integrity of the case remain our top priority,” Luistro said.
Earlier, the committee found the two remaining impeachment complaints against Duterte sufficient in substance, enabling the next procedural steps. Duterte has been instructed to submit her answer within a strict 10-day deadline.
Following House rules, the complainants then have three calendar days to respond, with Duterte allowed another three days for a rejoinder. Luistro stressed that these steps are procedural safeguards before the committee formally conducts hearings.
Once hearings conclude, the committee will determine whether there is probable cause to send the impeachment case to the Senate for trial.
