Three-time Philippine national badminton champion Jewel Angelo “Jelo” Albo is taking his next career step in Canada, ending his stint with the national team to pursue opportunities abroad.
The 22-year-old men’s singles specialist is leaving Smash Pilipinas after years of competing for the country, with coaching among the career possibilities he intends to explore overseas.
His decision comes on the heels of another successful campaign, having completed a men’s singles title hat-trick at the Philippine National Badminton Open in July.
Albo secured his third straight crown by overcoming fellow national team player Clarence Villaflor, further cementing his reputation as one of the country’s leading badminton players.
He also demonstrated his potential on the international stage, earning silver at the Czech International Future Series in June. He advanced to the final before falling to Germany’s Luis Pongratz.
A former University of the Philippines standout, Albo first gained recognition in the junior circuit, collecting national titles and Palarong Pambansa victories. He subsequently received UAAP Season 85 Rookie of the Year recognition.
He went on to represent the Philippines in major competitions, including the Southeast Asian Games and Asian Badminton Championships.
While his departure is a setback for Philippine badminton, his move to Canada does not necessarily mean a change of sporting allegiance. No announcement has been made regarding plans to represent Canada in international competition.
