MANILA, Philippines — Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala faces another stern test in her bid for a strong campaign at the Prudential Hong Kong Open when she battles American Alycia Parks in the opening round on Tuesday, November 3.
The match is expected to begin at approximately 10 a.m. Philippine time, subject to the tournament’s official order of play and possible scheduling adjustments.
The second-seeded Eala, currently ranked No. 19 in the world, will meet the 25-year-old Parks, ranked No. 65, in what promises to be a challenging opening-round encounter in the WTA 250 tournament.
The matchup carries added intrigue as the two players enter their third career meeting with their head-to-head record evenly split at 1-1.
Parks drew first blood when she defeated the Filipina in the opening round of the Australian Open last January, recovering from a disastrous first set to score a 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Eala, however, exacted revenge at the Toronto Open in August, producing a convincing performance to eliminate the American in the second round, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
Their previous encounters suggest that the Hong Kong showdown could develop into another closely contested battle, particularly with both players familiar with each other’s strengths and playing styles.
Parks is expected to rely on her aggressive baseline game, powerful serve and formidable two-handed backhand to disrupt Eala’s rhythm. Her ability to dictate exchanges and put pressure on opponents makes her a dangerous first-round assignment despite the considerable gap in their world rankings.
The American demonstrated her fighting ability in their Australian Open encounter. After dropping the opening set without winning a game, Parks said she initially struggled with the energetic and heavily pro-Eala crowd at Melbourne Park’s Court 6.
She eventually regained her composure, increased her aggression and leaned on her powerful serve to turn the match around.
For Eala, the Hong Kong tournament offers another opportunity to strengthen her position among the world’s leading players and translate her growing reputation into another significant result on the professional circuit.
The Filipina has indicated that she remains highly motivated despite her early departure from the Ningbo Open. Following that campaign, she said she was not yet ready to reflect on her accomplishments, preferring to concentrate on the tournament ahead.
“I’m super excited and I’m going in with high motivation,” Eala said. “I’m trying to put my reflections off for one more week because of said motivation. Check back in a week.”
As the tournament’s second seed, Eala enters the competition with considerable expectations. But against an opponent who has already beaten her once, she cannot afford to take anything for granted.
The Hong Kong opener will provide an immediate test of her readiness, confidence and determination to make another strong run in the international tennis circuit.
