MANILA — The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) is urging Philippine universities to transform their academic programs and research priorities to prepare students for a future increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, environmental pressures and shifting workforce needs.
CHED Chairperson Shirley Agrupis said higher education institutions must become more forward-looking, equipping learners with the competencies needed to thrive amid technological disruption while helping address the country’s development challenges.
Agrupis outlined the call during the Regional Policy Conference on Future-Ready Higher Education in Iloilo City on Oct. 15, highlighting leadership, innovation and sustainability as essential elements of institutional reform.
She emphasized that universities have a responsibility to produce not only job-ready graduates but also researchers and problem-solvers capable of responding to the country’s changing needs.
Among the measures being advanced by CHED are flexible learning options, distance education, and micro-credentials designed to help students and workers develop targeted competencies. The agency is likewise encouraging research that can generate solutions in climate adaptation, food production, healthcare and renewable energy.
Universities are also being urged to strengthen ties with industries and communities to ensure that courses remain relevant and research outputs address real-world concerns.
CHED said academic institutions must continuously assess whether their teaching methods, curricula and research programs are keeping pace with emerging technologies and environmental realities.
The agency’s push reflects the growing need for an education system that can adapt to disruption without losing sight of its broader social mission.
By investing in relevant skills, meaningful research and sustainable practices, Philippine universities can help prepare the next generation for a future in which technological competence and environmental responsibility will be increasingly important.
