MANILA — The Philippines is set for a busy year on the international women’s tennis calendar after securing two WTA tournaments in 2027.
The Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) said Thursday that the WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open will return in January, while a new WTA 250 tournament is being planned for late October or early November.
PHILTA board member Dyan Castillejo said the January event will remain on the calendar despite the addition of the WTA 250 later in the year.
“We’re having a WTA 125 still in January, the second week of the Australian Open. And then we’re going to have a 250 end of October, first week of November,” Castillejo said.
PHILTA Secretary General John Rey Tiangco said details for the WTA 250 were recently finalized with its franchise holder.
The development gives Filipino tennis followers two opportunities to watch elite women players compete in the country.
The inaugural Philippine Women’s Open earlier this year featured Colombia’s Camila Osorio, who captured the singles title, while Filipina star Alex Eala made the quarterfinals.
PHILTA said the WTA has approved Manila’s application for the additional tournament.
The venues and exact dates for both events will be announced later.
