MANILA — Carlos Edriel Yulo made history for the Philippines Thursday, winning the men’s floor exercise gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
Yulo earned 14.666 points for his routine, which carried a 5.7 difficulty score, as he turned in a composed performance at the Nagoya General Gymnasium.
The Filipino star competed fourth in the final and immediately established a formidable score for his rivals to chase.
The gold was the Philippines’ first in the Games after five medals had been secured earlier — a silver from Jean Claude Saclag and bronzes from Carlos Alvarez, Marie June Adriano, the women’s kata team and the women’s soft tennis team.
Yulo’s latest achievement adds another major international title to a career that already includes Olympic gold medals from Paris 2024, three world championships and nine Southeast Asian Games championships.
The 26-year-old gymnast had also been the Philippines’ top floor exercise performer during the earlier team and all-around competitions.
He will return to action Friday for the vault and parallel bars finals, where he will seek to add more medals to his Asian Games haul.
Karl Eldrew Yulo, meanwhile, finished seventh in the floor exercise final after scoring 12.233 points with a 5.3 difficulty rating.
Carlos Yulo’s golden performance finally gave the Philippine delegation the breakthrough it had been seeking in Nagoya.
