MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has filed criminal complaints against the father of the student who carried out the deadly shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University and a school security personnel following an investigation into the incident.
The Aug. 18 shooting at the university’s Junior High School resulted in the death of a Grade 10 student and injuries to another student. The shooter later died by suicide.
The PNP said Thursday that investigators determined that the two firearms used in the attack were registered to the shooter’s father, a customs police officer.
Investigators also found weaknesses in the school’s security procedures, particularly its systems for screening individuals entering and leaving the campus.
The Police Regional Office 9-led Special Investigation Task Group said it found no evidence connecting the shooting to a wider conspiracy or involvement by any organization or other individuals.
Authorities likewise found no confirmed school or personal dispute that could explain the attack. The investigation, however, identified signs of prior preparation and the student’s exposure to violent material online.
The probe also determined that shortcomings in firearm safekeeping and accountability had allowed the student unauthorized access to the weapons.
As a result, prosecutors received a complaint for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and physical injury against the shooter’s father and the school security personnel.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said authorities must avoid speculation and allow evidence and due process to guide the determination of liability.
The police chief said the incident should also serve as a warning to firearm owners, schools and security personnel to strengthen preventive measures.
He called for tighter firearm security, regular reviews of school access controls and improved screening procedures. He also urged parents and the public to immediately raise concerns over threats, violent conduct or other warning signs.
