MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has moved closer to wrapping up its probe into the alleged “honey trap” plot against Executive Secretary Ralph Recto, with lawyers linked to the case appearing before investigators.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag said Atty. Orlando Mendiola and two junior lawyers from the Rondain & Mendiola Law Firm appeared before the NBI-NCR on Aug. 17 after receiving subpoenas.
Atty. Ruy Rondain, who was also summoned, failed to attend because of flooding caused by bad weather, according to the NBI.
Matibag said investigators are assessing the lawyers’ statements along with other information gathered in the probe to determine what actually happened and whether anyone should face charges.
The investigation began after a talent manager identified as “Alias Ken” alleged that a scheme was being prepared to discredit Recto through fabricated accusations involving illegal drugs and sexual misconduct.
The lawyers and other personalities implicated in the allegations have denied involvement.
Matibag said the NBI expects to finish its investigation within three to five days, after which its findings could be forwarded to the Department of Justice if evidence supports the filing of criminal charges.
The lawyers’ appearance before the NBI marks a critical stage in the investigation as authorities move from gathering statements to determining whether the explosive allegations can be backed by evidence.
The probe is nearing its endgame—with the NBI now poised to decide whether the alleged “honey trap” will lead to criminal charges.
