MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has commended an off-duty police officer for helping authorities track down and apprehend an alleged hit-and-run suspect following a road crash in Antipolo City.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. praised Executive Master Sergeant Andy Evangelista for immediately responding to the incident despite being off duty, saying the officer’s actions reflected the commitment expected of police personnel to protect the public.
“I commend PEMS Andy Evangelista for responding to the incident and helping apprehend the suspect even while off duty. His actions show his commitment to public safety and his duty as a police officer,” Nartatez said in a statement Tuesday.
Evangelista pursued the suspect after a road crash on Aug. 14 that allegedly involved an employee of the Land Transportation Office–Quezon City District Office.
According to the report, the suspect was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol when the vehicle struck pedestrians before leaving the scene.
Nartatez also welcomed National Police Commission chief Rafael Vicente Calinisan’s statement that he would explore the possibility of granting Evangelista a spot promotion in recognition of his actions.
The PNP chief, however, reminded police personnel that responding to incidents outside official duty hours must still be done with due regard for established procedures and personal safety.
“Police officers remain committed to protecting the public even outside their regular duty hours,” Nartatez said, while stressing the need for officers to act within the law and established police procedures.
He likewise emphasized that police officers must protect not only the public but themselves while responding to emergencies.
The incident, he said, serves as a reminder that the responsibility to safeguard the community extends beyond an officer’s regular duty, provided that actions are carried out lawfully and safely.
